Huracán María, sí de eso se trata. ¿A estas alturas, más de dos años después, todavía escribiendo sobre María? Pero si ya vamos por los temblores de tierra, los meteoritos, la basura espacial, el corona virus COVID-19, lo que no mencioné y lo que aparezca, ¿por qué regresar a los huracanes?
Eso se preguntarán algunos, quizás la mayoría, de los que lean. Pues sí, a estas alturas. ¿Por qué? En primer lugar, porque todavía me duele mucho y sé que seguirá doliendo María. Escribir es una de mis formas de, entre otras cosas, aliviar el dolor. Pero no sólo mi dolor, sino el de tantas personas que fueron tan afectadas y todavía no ven salida, y siguen abandonadas y olvidadas. Eso me duele mucho más. Además, me resulta importante por aquello de las lecciones. Decía una de mis maestras que si lo escribes, no lo olvidas, lo aprendes, y lo puedes trasmitir con más facilidad. Es posible que otros se sientan identificados y esto también los ayude. Después de todo, ¿de qué sirven el sufrimiento y las experiencias si no aprendemos de ellos? Y si no logramos ninguna de las anteriores, por lo menos nos desahogamos y hasta nos reímos un poquito.
María. ¿Por dónde comenzar? Generalmente, por el principio. Difícil reconocer a estas alturas cuál es el principio. Marcharemos desde el principio de los recuerdos. Valga señalar que he comenzado y añadido a este escrito desde la visita de María. No lo he podido terminar hasta ahora. Consideré dejarlo guardado, pero no, no lo guardaré. Voy a compartirlo.
Expectativas. Evento catastrófico, esa fue la frase que se me grabó desde que se hizo evidente que María nos visitaría. Me daba escalofríos. No sólo porque pensaba en el concepto y su significado -evento catastrófico, evento catastrófico-, sino porque tenía la preocupación de cuán claros estábamos de esta realidad.

Quizás por la genial creencia de muchos puertorriqueños de que somos bendecidos, nuestra tierra es especial, privilegiada y protegida, el concepto de catástrofe no penetraba en nuestro entendimiento, en nuestros sentidos. ¿Habrá penetrado después de María? Creo que en algunos casos sí, pero en general, tengo mis dudas. Ahora que ya hemos pasado por temblores de tierra continuos y otros desastres, ese pensamiento se ha modificado un poco.
Dos días antes del pronosticado arribo de María, decidí acudir a mi refugio, el hogar de unos amigos que son como familia. Algunos pensaron que era exagerada esta precaución. Observando los informes meteorológicos me preguntaba si estábamos todos viendo lo mismo. Claro que no. Hay quien dice que a veces vemos lo que queremos ver, lo que quisiéramos que fuera. A veces no vemos porque no queremos, aunque el objeto esté delante de nuestras narices. Escuché a personas comentar que no nos debíamos preocupar tanto, “ya verán que tan pronto se acerque un poco, se desvía y no nos toca”, decían. ¡Ay, Dios mío, por qué no usamos el cerebro, los oídos y los ojos que nos regalaste!
Actitudes y reacciones . Las catástrofes le ocurren a los demás. Se nos olvida que en algún momento, todos somos los demás. Pues ahora nos graduamos, tenemos certificado y licencia: ya somos los demás, con todo y catástrofe, y también lecciones.
No tenemos que haber sufrido la pérdida de un ser querido, la casa, el techo, el trabajo, el auto, los juguetes para entender y sufrir los efectos de este huracán. Cada cual tuvo pérdidas y sufrimientos diferentes. Cada cual los manejó de manera diferente. Pero la catástrofe nos tocó a todos. Y, ¿qué hicimos con la experiencia? Muchos hemos aprendido de ella, la hemos usado a nuestro favor y a favor de otros. Algunos, tristemente, no hicieron nada. Siguen confiando en que el próximo huracán, o la próxima catástrofe no nos toque, que se desvíe a último momento. Y si acaso llega, siguen esperando que “alguien” los ayude, les resuelva.
Agraciadamente hay mucho consejo, sugerencias, ayuda para superar la situación. Se lo dejo a los expertos. Si hiciera una recomendación sería, usar la sabiduría de los expertos hasta donde sea prudente y aplicable a nuestro caso particular, pero no depender absolutamente de ella. Cada experiencia es única y personal. Creo que debemos trabajar la nuestra con eso en mente y haciendo nuestro esfuerzo individual.
Aunque tomé muy en serio lo del evento catastrófico que nos amenazaba, me he dado cuenta que me quedé muy corta en cuanto a medir la extensión del mismo. Hay cosas que son tan evidentes como inundaciones, derrumbes, árboles, postes, y cables caídos, casas sin techo, gente sin casa, falta de electricidad, agua, comunicación. Todas esas, en alguna medida, las habíamos experimentado, esperábamos que sucedieran, no nos extrañaron. Obviamente, sí les sorprendió a algunos la magnitud de estos acontecimientos. ¿Por qué? Porque realmente no llegamos a digerir el verdadero significado de CATÁSTROFE. Francamente, no me sorprendió tanto la destrucción física. Escuché más de una vez, a más de un experto advertir lo que se avecinaba y sus consecuencias. Lo entendí, lo tomé en serio, y luego, lo confirmé.
La parte en que creo haberme quedado corta, fue en medir las reacciones, las actitudes, la conducta que hemos tenido y seguimos demostrando después de la mentada María, a la que, como ven apellidé Catástrofe y Lecciones. La bauticé así por aquello de, por un lado reconocer que sí podemos ser tocados por un evento catastrófico, pero por otro, no quedarnos en lo negativo, sino tratar de derivar algo de aprendizaje de esta experiencia. Así podríamos aplicarla a las que seguirán. Sí, seguirán.
La cantidad de omisiones y contradicciones desde la preparación para el evento, hasta el momento en que nos encontramos tanto tiempo después, de por sí son catastróficas. El manejo de información, de bienes y servicios, aún dentro de estas circunstancias, muestra la parte más oscura y negativa de los seres humanos. Eso es a nivel de los que tienen la responsabilidad de proveer, organizar, distribuir. Qué no diremos del ser humano común y corriente que lo que quiere es sobrevivir, sin importar a quien se lleve por delante.
Sorpresas. Sin embargo, fue refrescante darnos cuenta de que, aún en lo peor del evento y sus consecuencias, siempre, por alguna parte salió lo bueno del ser humano. Si bien es cierto que daba pánico salir a las carreteras llenas de escombros, los consabidos hoyos de siempre más los que dejó María, sin semáforos para controlar el flujo de vehículos, era sorprendente y muy agradable ver a ciudadanos particulares ayudando a la policía a dirigir el tránsito. También, me sorprendieron las muestras de amabilidad de muchos al ceder el paso, reconociendo lo crítico de la situación; los que hacíamos breves paradas para dejarle agua o alimentos a los que trabajaban para hacernos la vida un poco menos difícil; los vecinos que se conocieron y reconocieron en el proceso de interesarse en el bienestar de los demás y compartir lo que tenían.
Vivencias.
La oscuridad. Algo que me llamó mucho la atención es cómo nos afecta la oscuridad, consecuencia de no tener electricidad. Sí, claro, no podemos tener agua ni refrescos fríos, mucho menos hielo o carnes en buena condición. Tampoco la comodidad del acondicionador de aire, la televisión, lavadora, secadora. En algún momento pensé que el Huracán Hugo nos había enseñado que la vida sin hielo es posible, que no es necesario pelear ni matar por hielo. Pero no, en esa clase nos “colgamos”. Por supuesto, hago la salvedad de que para muchas personas que tienen circunstancias especiales el hielo es vital. Pero el ser humano común y corriente puede sobrevivir sin hielo. La prueba está en que muchos que hubieran podido matar por hielo mientras no tenían electricidad, al recobrarla ni recordaron al bendito elemento. ¡Hasta se tomaban a temperatura ambiental lo que antes no! Les aseguro que si no quedé loca antes, a este punto ya estaba de atar.
Pero no me refiero a eso. Es que noté que muchas personas se desorientan, ejem, muchos nos desorientábamos, cuando caía la noche y ¡no podíamos encender la bendita luz! La cosa llegaba a nivel de mareo, desbalance y terminaba en mal humor. Otros tropezaban, otra vez, tropezábamos, con los demás, física y emocionalmente, por culpa de María Catástrofe-Lecciones, y la falta de electricidad.
De hecho, recientemente le comentaba a mi hermana que no estaba tan consciente de cuánto me había afectado la oscuridad, hasta que comenzaron a reconstruir en áreas cercanas a mi residencia y a reparar los postes y luminarias. A veces me asomaba a la ventana, a cualquier hora de la noche o la madrugada, solamente para comprobar que había iluminación fuera de la casa.
Toque de queda. Esto es algo a lo que no estamos acostumbrados. Por alguna razón, siempre alguien tenía una gestión importante que hacer y confligía con el período de toque de queda. Los nervios, las discusiones, el ajuste y desajuste eran la orden del día. Si la persona que estaba fuera durante el toque de queda se tardaba en llegar, ya nos imaginábamos policía, cuartel, problemas, más problemas. ¡Qué histeria! Y qué ridiculez. Total, los policías no podían atender tanta cosa.
Sabandijas y otras criaturitas a granel. Consecuencia muy natural del cambio atmosférico que experimentamos. No es raro que aparezca de vez en cuando un ratón, las llamadas gallinas de palo y hasta los sapos. Pero aquello fue una invasión. En una ocasión, me cuentan, que mientras estábamos reunidos familiares, vecinos y amigos en la marquesina, un ratón pasó corriendo detrás de mí, mientras otros miraban y yo ni me enteré. Los que lo vieron se quedaron calladitos, muy sabiamente, porque si me hubiera dado cuenta, hubiera ocurrido otra catástrofe. No, no les tengo miedo, sino respeto y asco y eso me hace gritar, hablar en lenguas y correr.
Aprendí que no todos los sapos son Conchos, también hay Sapos Julie. Y nos daban serenatas todas las noches, mientras hubo agua acumulada. No me interesan mucho que digamos, pero me llamó la atención el sonido que hacían durante la noche. Primero me asustó, luego me hacía falta. No, no es cierto, sólo me acostumbré.
Hacer larguísimas filas. Eso fue una tortura, filas para conseguir gasolina -esto fue lo más absurdo-, hielo, comida, medicinas, dinero en efectivo. No que no estemos acostumbrados al orden, pero es que en estos casos, por lo general, el propósito quedaba cancelado por el tiempo que pasábamos en las filas.
Tratar con políticos. Jamás pensé que alguna vez en la vida recibiría un beso de un alcalde. Pues sí, algunas de esas filas son ocasiones muy especiales para los políticos. Se me activaron todas las alergias.
Hubo otros detalles menos dramáticos, quizás hasta graciosos y dignos de recordar. Los que me conocen bien saben que no saldría ni de aquí a la esquina sin maquillaje, pelo arreglado y en sandalias de casa. María lo logró. Tampoco imaginé que algún día manejaría un auto lentamente, mientras alguien a quien quiero mucho recogía cocos secos que cayeron de las palmas. Todavía no puedo creerlo, pero lo hice. Algo que la mayoría de nosotros tuvo que hacer: conducir hasta una autopista, u otro lugar céntrico para poder conseguir señal para el celular. ¡Qué escándalo!
Lecciones. Estas son algunas de las lecciones que tengo la esperanza de que hayamos aprendido. Algunas ya son parte de nuestra vida, pero las podemos mejorar, afilar, pulir. Escuchar, no sólo oir. Eso implica observar, analizar, comparar datos, llegar a conclusiones que nos motiven a actuar correctamente. Estar alerta. La información, la rutina, la vida cambian constantemente. Si estamos alerta podemos modificar acciones para lograr buenos resultados. Ser pacientes. No significa quedarnos quietos, no actuar. Significa estar conscientes de cuándo es apropiado esperar. Flexibilidad, quizás la que tuvo mayor significado para mí. Es bueno tener una vida estructurada, pero no siempre nos va a servir. En ocasiones hay que adaptarse a las circunstancias, aunque conlleve sacrificio. Y una de las más importantes para mí, reconocer que todo lo que hacemos y también lo que no hacemos, tiene consecuencias.
Ojalá que la consecuencia final de esta experiencia y sus lecciones sea que estaremos mejor preparados para la vida, con catástrofes o sin ellas.
