Éste parece ser un nuevo mandamiento por el cual se rigen muchas personas amantes de los animales.

Tengo la leve sospecha de que lo que voy a decir no va a ser del agrado de alguno. Posiblemente hasta le moleste a otros.  Espero que, por lo menos algunos, entiendan mi punto de vista.  Ni siquiera les pido que lo compartan, sólo que lo entiendan y lo respeten.  Recuerden que trato de expresarme y conducirme Con Mucho Respeto y eso espero de vuelta.  Dicho esto, aquí vamos.

La relación entre los seres humanos y las mascotas es de las más importantes y bellas que hay en la vida.  Pero, como en casi todas las cosas y las relaciones, podemos ser equilibrados o podemos llevarlas a extremos.

Por un lado, están los seres humanos que abusan de los animales, sean estos mascotas o no, y los abandonan y maltratan de maneras, irónicamente, bestiales.  En algunos países existen leyes muy severas para castigar el maltrato contra animales, lo que favorezco.  En otros, parece que se hacen de la vista larga.  Creo que es tiempo de que actúen.  Hay también muchas organizaciones civiles atendiendo estos asuntos y protegiendo a los animales.  Gracias a Dios por ellos.

Por otro lado, están los que aman tanto a los animales, que los tratan como si fueran personas.  De hecho, algunos no tratan a otros seres humanos tan bien como a sus mascotas.  Les dan toda clase de atenciones, los malcrían como hacen con los niños, y a veces hasta más que a los niños, se ajustan a los antojos y gustos de sus mascotas, y qué sé yo qué más.  Creo que cada cual es dueño de comportarse como quiera en su casa, con sus hijos y sus mascotas.  Pero lo cierto es que vivimos en un mundo en el cual no somos realmente tan independientes como queremos creer.  La mayoría de los seres humanos vive en sociedad.  De una u otra forma estamos todos conectados y nos necesitamos.  De manera que, lo que hagamos en nuestra casa con hijos y mascotas, sí afecta a los demás.

He leído y escuchado a personas decir que “si no te gustan las mascotas, no vengas a mi casa”, o cosas por el estilo.  A veces parece algo gracioso, otras sencillamente algo que tenemos derecho a decir por que sí, porque queremos y qué, si te molesta es tu problema. Pero el problema no es que lo digamos o pongamos por escrito, es que lo practicamos.  He visto, y quizás ustedes también, a personas que no besarían a alguien que acaban de conocer, tampoco a algunos conocidos, mucho menos en la boca.  Sin embargo, se dan unos besos con perritos y gatitos que dejan a uno pensando.  Pensando en muchas cosas, una de ellas la higiene.  ¿Estarán conscientes de que con esa misma boquita y lengüita que los besaron esos animalitos llevan a cabo toda su higiene?  Sí, se limpian toooodas sus partecitas con la lengua con que te saludan y te demuestran cariño, todas, esas también.

Pero volvemos a lo mismo, eso es problema de cada cual.  Mi problema es que no quiero besar a tu mascota, ni a la mía, ni que ellas me besen.  Tampoco quiero vivir, comer y dormir dentro del mismo espacio que ellas.  Por lo tanto, por mucho que te ame, tampoco te quiero besar a ti sabiendo que te besas con tu mascota.  Y quizás no me tendrás que prohibir la entrada a tu casa, porque lo cierto es que se me haría bien difícil visitarte si tengo que compartir con tu mascota en la silla, la mesa, el plato.  Ah, pues entonces no hay problema, parecería que estamos en paz:  Tú decides que no puedo entrar a tu casa, porque, aunque me gustan las mascotas, hay cosas que no estoy dispuesta a tolerar.  Yo decido, que si entro a tu casa, no te demuestro mi cariño y no me tomo ni un vaso de agua.  Pero no es tan sencillo, es que esto va más allá.  Las personas viven normalmente en casas.  Los animales viven fuera, expuestos a la naturaleza.  Cuando vivimos con los animales dentro del mismo espacio nos exponemos a situaciones anormales y hasta de riesgo para el ser humano.  Estemos conscientes o no, compartimos cosas que no debemos compartir.

Las personas que creen, como yo, que fuimos creados, sabemos o debemos saber, que el ser humano fue creado, diferente a los animales, con la capacidad de razonar.  Mientras que los animales fueron dotados de instinto.  Por cierto, los humanos tenemos la ventaja de también tener instinto, pero funciona, o debe funcionar, de manera diferente al instinto animal.

Definiciones de la Real Academia Española (RAE):

“razonar

Exponer razones para explicar o demostrar algo.

Ordenar y relacionar ideas para llegar a una conclusión.

instinto

Conjunto de pautas de reacción que, en los animales, contribuyen a la conservación de la vida del individuo y de la especie.”

Sí, lo sé, estoy escuchando.  A veces estas capacidades se nos cruzan, los humanos nos olvidamos de razonar y actuamos sólo por instinto, y algunos animales parecen razonar.  Pero recuerden que estoy hablando en general y pensando en acciones extremas.  Además, ¿se imaginan a un animal ordenando y relacionando ideas para llegar a una conclusión?  Yo me lo imagino, pero por más que nos parezca que sí, no sucede.

Para mí ha sido lamentable ver a personas anteponiendo el bienestar de los animales al de los seres humanos, su verdadero prójimo.  Por poner un ejemplo, el caso en que un niñito cayó al lugar donde se encontraba un gorila en un zoológico.  El personal del lugar decidió sacrificar al animal para salvar al niñito.  Muchos de nosotros hubiéramos querido que los dos siguieran vivos.  Sin embargo, cuando leí y escuché las razones por las que muchos de los humanos rechazaban la muerte del animal, me dí cuenta que no había verdadero razonamiento.  Peor aún, tampoco tomaban en cuenta el amor que debería haber entre seres humanos, lo que también nos separa de los animales.  Parecían pasar por alto totalmente el hecho de que el niño corría peligro, que aún siguiendo su instinto de proteger, el animal podía lastimar al niño y que el factor tiempo era vital.  Confiaban absolutamente en el instinto del animal para cuidar al niño.  Sí, hemos visto casos en que eso sucede.  Pero me pregunto cuán razonable es exponer el bienestar, la salud, la vida de un ser humano a favor de la de un animal.

Muchas personas dicen que vale tanto la vida de un humano como la de un animal.  No lo creo así.  Tengo que referirme nuevamente a la creación.  Si así fuera, ¿por que puso el Creador a los animales en sujeción a los seres humanos?  Francamente, por la forma de conducirse de algunos humanos parece que están sujetos a los animales y quieren obligar a otros a hacer lo mismo.

Estemos claros.  Como dije al principio, una cosa es maltratar y torturar a los animales.  Eso es detestable y condenable.  Pero maltratar a nuestro prójimo (Definición de RAE: “Persona respecto de otra, consideradas bajo el concepto de la solidaridad humana”) a favor de proteger a los animales, para mí es una tergiversación de lo que deben ser nuestros valores.

¿Por qué no amar a nuestro prójimo como a nosotros mismos, como iguales?  ¿Y por qué no amar y cuidar a las mascotas como lo que son, criaturas maravillosas, pero inferiores a nuestro prójimo?
